Progress!

DIY decorative tray accomplished!

Shaun and I have had this guy, shown below, sitting on our coffee table for the longest time, holding a collection of candles and remote controls for the TV and DVD player. Albeit handy, it was a bit of an eye-sore.

So I decided to beautify it with a bit of designer wrapping paper. I got mine from Paper Source on Santana Row. $5 got me twice the amount of paper needed to cover the bottom of the tray.

Originally I was thinking I’d buy a picture frame that was about the same size and use the glass as protective layer, but Shaun had the brilliant idea to get a custom-cut piece of plastic from Tap Plastic on the Alameda. Not only was it less expensive at about $7, but it’s more shatter-resistant.

Once home with all of my material, I took a cardboard box and placed the paper design-side down on it. Then I outlined the plastic on the paper with a razor, yielding a perfectly smooth cut just the right size to fit in the tray!

And voila!

Bonus? I like the option of changing the paper whenever I want.

The most exciting progress, however, was not a home improvement.

I am SO OVER having to put my walking cast on just to walk to my car only to have to take it off to drive and put it back on at my destination. So I decided Monday that my foot felt good enough to wear my running shoes to my car. The plan was to put my cast on at the gym. Only, my foot felt so good normal when I wore my shoes to the car that I decided to it out and wear ‘em into the gym. I knew if I had any misgivings, my cast was in the car.

I am so ridiculously happy with the results! I managed to complete an entire 45 minutes on the elliptical (on a low-low resistance and incline) without any problems. The only discomfort I felt the following morning was ever so slight and it was the good kind, caused by using neglected-too-long muscles. The only real issue I’m experiencing is limping. I think I’ve just been limping for so long (almost 4 months!), even before I had the cast, that even with no pain it’s going to take some time and effort to reteach my body to walk normally again. I feel like the elliptical does a good job of aligning my body, forcing me to distribute my weight evenly.

I am debating whether to wear my cast to the gym today. Yesterday, Tuesday, I was conservative and wore my boot all day long and at the gym except at the end of my workout when I changed into my shoe for a 30 minute go on the elliptical. I want to start training myself to walk normally and there is no way that will happen with the cast on. My doctor also said as soon as I feel up to, I should start transitioning back into normal footwear. However, I feel like my foot is not completely healed, since hard surfaces still cause a dull ache when I try to distribute my weight evenly. My thinking is that all the cushioning in my shoe will protect it enough. Meaning, at this point the healing is so far along that the shoe offers the same support as the boot. But I guess it’s better to be safe than sorry and give it another week before I lose the cast completely…………..?!
