Slowly But Surely

First, can I just say “Holy hot weather!”?

Of course now that my leg is on the mend, it’s too hot to run outside! Didn’t stop me, however, from heading to Santa Teresa Golf Course on Sunday with Shrek.

This course is lovely and I like that they don’t require a tee time. You just pay in the pro shop ($11 pp weekdays and $15 on weekends for 9 holes) and walk up to Hole One when you’re ready to tee off. Though, I personally like hitting a small bucket of balls ($6 – cash only and exact change required) at the driving range beforehand to get a few practice swings in. Ideally, it helps my game if I get some putting in, too. And why not, it’s free! With nowhere to be on Sunday, we took our sweet time at both the driving range and the putting green. Usually a nine hole course takes me a little less than 2 hours to complete, but Shrek and I spent a good 3+ hours on Sunday. We also may have stopped for a Bloody Mary break. ;) They make THE BEST Bloody Marys here! Strong and spicy, just the way I like ‘em!

The absence of tee times can make teeing off from Hole One a tad intimidating since a line often forms and = an audience. Yet, it can also make you determined to be a better golfer. My first time I went to Santa Teresa and teed off from Hole One (btw, I have no idea if I’m using the proper terminology with any of my golf-speak!), I hit my ball into a water feature which was wayyy off to the right of the fairway. D’oh. Within one week, however, I squeezed in two more trips to the driving range and this time my ball sailed nicely up to and landed just right of the green. Clearly, me not hitting the ball to the right still needs work, but despite this deficit I still managed to get a par and a birdie over the course of 9 holes! Woohoo!! *Snoopy dance ensues* This may have even been good enough to best Shrek by 2 strokes when we tallied up our final scores… but you’ll have to ask him!! ;)

Monday’s workout –  I ran inside on the treadmill at a healthy clip:

Also rode the upright bike for 20 minutes + 15 minute weights. (A series of overhead presses, pushups, and rows to work my arms and balance out all the leg stuff I did earlier.)

Tuesday’s workout – I got 5.5 miles in outside. It was hot. It was sweaty. And man, did my shower feel AMAZING when I was done. I also felt amazing for completing that run! My mile splits were a minute slower than they were on Saturday, but given the heat I was dealing with I’m fine with that. I also ran a route I new had water fountains every couple of miles or so and I stopped at each one to hydrate.

Wednesday’s workout – Since I broke my ‘no running two days in a row’ rule, I took it really easy on Wednesday. Just walked on the treadmill at the gym for 20 minutes and road the bike for another 25 before meeting up with my friend for dinner at a new (to me) Thai restaurant. But that’s for another post!
