Thanks to some boasting on his girlfriend’s part (yeah, that’d be me), Shrek found himself competing in a Margarita Throwdown Friday night:
Hello friends – we are finally organizing this much anticipated event. A blind test for the best margarita
and guacuamole in the bay area.
Who will it be – master bartender Shaun on one corner or the tenacious
texan on the other? This is serious now since Mindy brags about Shauns skills and I do the same for Brians
bartending talents. Please join us and be prepared to crown this years….Best of….award.
Along with bragging rights, an award and prize will be given to the winner!! (no pressure).
This is a great way to kick off spring/summer 2011 with some great chums!
Please RSVP.

We packed everything but our kitchen sink – blender, liquors, ice, glasses, Costco bags of limes and strawberries, and mixing tools – over to our friend’s place where the guys went head to head mixing margaritas for the judges. Though we had a full house with 10 in attendance, there were only 3 official judges. Obviously, neither Sonja nor I could vote due to our bias
Once the votes were tallied based on presentation and taste, the tenacious Texan’s traditional margarita trumped Shrek’s all-natural strawberry margarita… only by 3 points! (Out of 30.) I will also note that the judges claimed to not like/order “fruity” drinks but raved that Shrek’s was “Amazing!” …And they had no trouble finishing them!
Shrek’s Strawberry Margaaritas – made with Costco/Kirkland Brand 100% Agave Tequila. $21.99 for 1.75 ML! Perfect for blending in margaritas.
The winning traditional margarita – made with Don Julio
In addition to margaritas, the guys mixed some other delightfully delicious (and potent!) concoctions:
- Caipirinhas — my favorite drink of the night but Ssshhh don’t tell Shrek since Brian made it!!
- Avocado margaritas
- “Pink Slip” pomegranate vodka martinis
- Orange Citrus vodka martini
Not personally a fan of the avocado margaritas… They were a bit creamy though I thought they might make good popsicles. The guys, however, had no trouble finishing the pitcher! Especially once they added tabasco as a garnish. I’ll take their word for it.
Sonja made THE YUMMIEST fresh mango salsa and picked up cupcakes from Love’s in downtown San Jose. Highly recommend the Fleur de Sel.

Drinks were amazing by Brian and Shaun, cupcakes from Loves Cupcakes in downtown Sj were Fab, but the best part was the fun, all-night of laughing company. Life is good!
