Cupcake Throwdown

Kara’s v. Sprinkles. It’s on!

Kara’s Peanut Butter Milk Chocolate Ganache: chocolate cupcake with a creamy smooth peanut butter and milk chocolate ganache frosting

You all know I love a good cupcake! My love affair with Kara’s is going strong as evidenced here, here, and here. Fleur de Sal, S’more, and Peanut Butter…. ziiiiing! A little bite of one of these favorites and I break into this dance:

On Sunday, however, I finally got to fully experience Sprinkles Cupcakes. You know, the cupcake made famous by the Hollywood famous? If you recall, I was not impressed with my initial experience with them. However, a representative from Sprinkles contacted and very generously invited me to come in and receive 4 cupcakes on them. I happened to be in the neighborhood over the weekend and selected Peanut butter, Chocolate Coconut, Red Velvet, and Marshmallow… OH MY! And hey, there just happened to be 4 of us that day! Although, we did cut them into fourths so we could try a bite of each.

Sprinkle-icious!

Wowsa. Flavorful, moist, sweet and scrumptious! Everything a cupcake should be! They certainly give Kara’s a run for the money. However, being the cupcake connoisseur that I am, my discerning palate honed from years of sampling cupcakes by the dozens tells me that Kara’s still comes out on top. Here’re the results of each matchup.

Kara’s. Scrumptious.

Kara’s Sweet Smore: chocolate cupcake with a graham cracker crust and a toasted marshmallow frosting

  • Kara’s Sweet S’more >Sprinkles Chocolate Marshmallow. You can’t beat Kara’s graham cracker crust bottom and toasted marshmallow topping! Sprinkles Marshmallow was yummy, but it reminded me of a fancier, better tasting (and about six times more expensive!) Hostess Cupcake.
  • Kara’s Sweet Peanut Butter Milk Chocolate Ganache > Sprinkles Peanut Butter Chip. To be fair, I should compare apples to apples and give Sprinkles Peanut Butter Chocolate a try. Unfortunately it was unavailable when I went and Sprinkles Peanut Butter Chip has a peanut butter cream cheese frosting that I didn’t care for. The consistency was a bit thick and too peanut buttery and rich.
  • Kara’s Coconut = Sprinkles Chocolate Coconut. This match up was SO CLOSE! I actually think I will haveto pit these two against one another once more for a tie breaker ;)
  • Sprinkles Red Velvet is amazingly divine! And Kara’s doesn’t have one, so Kara’s loses this round by default. However…
  • Kara’s Fleur de Sal Cupcake is my overall winner for BEST.CUPCAKE.EVER. Which trumps Sprinkles Red Velvet and therefore, Kara’s is the winner!!
