Call me crazy, but I’m loving the new sushi my local Safeways are stocking!
They really stepped up their game. The salmon-crab-mango roll is my favorite here. I treat myself to one about once a week. At $9 a pop they’re pricey for lunch (compared to a $3.50 Subway sandwich) and since the Safeway by my office is under construction I have to drive a good 10 minutes to get my fix. But on those days I’m craving sushi and don’t have time to wait for a to-go order or battle parking in downtown Los Gatos, it’s worth it. I also have a Lunardis, Whole Foods, Trader Joes, and Nob Hill within a 2-minute radius of my office but this Safeway sushi is just that superior.
One roll is plenty for me and it’s rather healthy — at least, healthier than some of the rolls they carry! Tried this beauty awhile back but it was a little too mayo-based for me with the crab/mayo and avocado filling and the creamy drizzle on top.
I also like that these rolls are all made fresh. You can place your order with the (very friendly!) sushi chef behind the sushi counter and go about picking up the rest of your groceries while your rolls are being prepared. Or, do what I do and pick out the best looking rolls that are already packaged and ready to go. Damn, I love living in California. You don’t understand that it is a miracle I even like sushi after growing up with the “sushi” I had available in Washington!
